Substack Notes made discovery work visible.

Substack launched Notes to all users on April 11, 2023 as a short-form network feature. The feature created a discoverability surface, not proof of subscription conversion.

What Substack launched

Substack opened Notes to all users on 11 April 2023. Its announcement described short posts, links, images and excerpts within a network feed, distinct from email-delivered Inbox posts. Notes appeared on the web and in the apps, with Home and Subscribed feeds.

The company presented an early release following a small test. Our reading treats this as a dated product description. Its intended discovery role leaves a separate question: what did a particular writer's audience actually do?

Discovery needs a chain of evidence

A short post is not an email send, and a restack is not a subscriber. Treat Notes work as a sequence: a note is published, an exposure or interaction occurs where observable, a reader visits a publication, a reader signs up, and a later reader chooses to pay. Each link has a different denominator. If a platform only exposes some of the chain, state that limitation instead of assigning conversion to the first visible interaction.

A small publisher can trial a repeatable format—such as a useful excerpt, a source note or a recommendation—while preserving the underlying article and email cadence. Log the time required, the content source, referral visits where identifiable, voluntary signups and returns. Compare the test with a stated pre-test period. The goal is to decide whether the work earns its place in the editorial schedule, not to chase an unqualified engagement total.

The promise was not a conversion result

Substack said it hoped Notes would help writers grow audience and revenue and called it a possible driver of subscriptions. Those are forward-looking platform statements. The release did not publish a controlled conversion result, a universal ranking rule, or a payout rate for notes. A post that gains attention can still produce no owned relationship, and a quiet post can still support an existing reader relationship.

For historical analysis, keep the feature date and the operator's outcome separate. Ask whether the audience action supports an editorial goal: discovery, reader conversation, a direct signup or retention. If the answer is commercial, retain evidence of the eventual action and the cost of producing it. That keeps a network feature from becoming an unsupported growth forecast.
