A grant depended on member income
The Bristol Cable's August 2024 campaign update said it had reached 107% of a target to increase membership income by roughly £60,000 over 12 months. The Reva & David Logan Foundation had offered a £40,000 bonus grant if membership income rose by 50%. A prior appeal described Patron membership at £1,000 a year or more. The target and the grant were linked, but they were distinct sources of funding: member contributions on one line, a conditional philanthropic award on another.
The campaign update credited both new members and existing members paying more. It reported about 100 new members in the final days and more than 600 existing members increasing contributions over the year. Those counts do not reveal how much each group contributed or how long new payment levels persisted. A sensible campaign ledger would separate new recurring commitments, upgrades, one-time gifts and the grant payment itself. Without that breakdown, it would be easy to double-count a matched pound as recurring income.

Higher contributions did not buy extra votes
The Cable explained that a Patron's larger payment did not alter its one-member, one-vote cooperative rule. Its transparency page says the 2023 member offer kept journalism free to access and offered benefit levels above £1, £5 and £10 a month, plus a Patron level. It later recorded annual membership income at £175,000 after a 54% increase and listed the £40,000 bonus grant in September 2024. That retrospective disclosure corroborates the outcome without turning a campaign target into a general annual operating result.
For a publisher considering a generous-support tier, governance and access belong in the offer design, not in fine print after launch. State what paying more does: it may subsidize reporting and bring defined benefits, but it need not buy editorial influence or more votes. This principle may matter to any publication seeking higher voluntary contributions, although a cooperative has formal rules and obligations that a sole-owner website does not share. The Cable's particular match also required an external grantmaker willing to make that commitment.

A successful campaign is not a sustainability verdict
A matched campaign can bring forward a funding decision and explain why upgrading now matters. It can also create an apparent step change that disappears if the grant is one-off or if enhanced memberships later lapse. The Cable's page describes progress toward sustainability; the cited campaign result alone cannot establish an operating surplus or long-term renewal rate. Its transparency page also lists grants and other income, so member receipts were one part of a broader budget.
A smaller outlet could use this as a design exercise: define the baseline recurring member income, the exact period for incremental income, which payments qualify, the grant condition and when funds arrive. After the deadline, publish the outcome and then follow retention over the next renewal cycle. Do not assume a conditional £40,000 grant is repeatable annual revenue, and do not mistake a 54% membership-income increase for 54% growth in the entire operation. The documented achievement is narrower and still substantial.

Sources & limits
Campaign increments, a one-time grant and annual membership income are different measures; renewal, operating margin and the grant's future availability are unknown.
