Turn affiliate link decay into an editorial work queue

A maintained commerce page knows which claim, product, merchant, program, disclosure, and destination each link depends on—and what to do when one changes.

Inventory the promise around each link

Crawl the site for affiliate parameters and known merchant domains, then join each link to its article, anchor text, product identifier, merchant, program, disclosure state, last editorial review, and claim type. Do not reduce maintenance to HTTP status. A link can return 200 while pointing to the wrong model, an unavailable variant, a marketplace search page, or a product whose recommendation no longer matches the article.

Classify links by editorial dependence. A named recommendation supports a substantive claim and deserves a higher priority than an optional example. A price, discount, or stock statement is time-sensitive. A category link may survive product churn but can become too vague. A comparison table may expose the same stale claim in several places. The inventory should connect duplicates so one change creates one investigation with multiple affected placements.

Cadence depends on traffic, volatility, and editorial consequence.

Separate automated checks from editorial checks

Automation can flag redirect chains, client and server errors, destination-domain changes, missing affiliate tags, identifier changes, and pages whose visible price text has aged past an internal threshold. It should not decide that a substitute product is equally good. Some merchant sites block automated requests or vary by geography, account, and inventory, so an inaccessible check is unknown rather than proof that the destination is dead.

The editor verifies product identity, availability for the intended market, current claim support, selection rationale, disclosure visibility, and whether the recommendation still serves the article. For Amazon's US program, current policies restrict how price and availability may be displayed and require qualifying data sources; other programs have different terms. Store the applicable program and policy URL with the link instead of generalizing one merchant's rule across all commerce content.

Prioritize by reader harm and exposure

Score the work queue with transparent inputs: editorial consequence, recent qualified traffic, commercial prominence, volatility, and confidence in the check. A broken primary recommendation on a high-traffic review outranks a low-traffic category link. A stale safety or compatibility claim outranks a missing tracking tag. Revenue loss matters, but it should not displace the reader-harm score.

Illustrative queue: Page A has 4,000 monthly visits, a discontinued top pick, and a prominent buy button; score 18 of 20 and remove the button immediately. Page B has 300 visits and a redirected category link that still matches the text; score 7 and review this week. Page C shows a six-month-old price sourced outside an allowed feed; score 16 and remove the price while retaining a truthful recommendation. The scores are local triage inputs, not industry benchmarks.

Choose a remedy that preserves editorial meaning

Available remedies include update the destination, remove the price, replace the product after a fresh comparison, remove the link but retain the editorial text, add an unavailable note, retire the recommendation, or archive the page. Never swap a high-commission alternative into a recommendation without redoing the evidence. Preserve the prior product and reason in the revision log so the page does not silently rewrite its history.

A material connection must remain clear and conspicuous near the recommendation where readers will encounter it. The disclosure should describe the actual benefit and should not imply that the merchant selected the editorial conclusion unless it did. When the commercial relationship ends, update the disclosure and links, but do not erase a documented conflict that was relevant when the review was produced.

Close the task with evidence and a retrigger

Each ticket should include detected issue, affected placements, last known good state, screenshots or saved output where permitted, editor decision, change made, reviewer, and next trigger. Recheck immediately after a merchant migration, program-policy change, product recall, model replacement, or reader report. A scheduled crawl is a backstop; event triggers catch consequential changes sooner.

Report maintenance separately from affiliate performance. Useful operations measures include unresolved high-priority tickets, median age of reviewed primary recommendations, and percentage of commerce pages with a current disclosure check. Clicks and commissions do not show whether the advice is still correct. A smaller, maintained catalog can serve readers better than a large archive whose links technically resolve but whose recommendations have decayed.

  • Never treat an HTTP success as a valid recommendation.
  • Remove unsupported price and stock language quickly.
  • Require a fresh editorial comparison before substitution.
  • Keep disclosure checks in the same ticket as link checks.
