Rakuten Advertising's own page discloses less than its archives do

Rakuten Advertising cites 25-plus years and legacy Linkshare branding, but archived snapshots bound its actual rebrand to 2019-2020.

The revenue mechanism

LinkShare was an affiliate network connecting publishers to merchant advertisers; its current operator, Rakuten Advertising, still runs that same basic mechanism, tracking referred sales and paying the publisher a commission the advertiser sets. The company's own history is easier to trace through its live website than through any single dated announcement. Its current publisher page, retrieved 16 September 2026, states the company has been 'operating for 25+ years' in affiliate marketing and has paid out '$1b+' in commissions, while its own login menu still sends 'Affiliate Advertiser' users to dashboard.linkshare.com and analytics users to a portal on iap.rakutenmarketing.com, leaving three brand names, LinkShare, Rakuten Marketing and Rakuten Advertising, visible on one current page.

What the documents show

Archived snapshots bound the rebrand's timing more precisely than the current site does. A Wayback Machine capture of rakutenmarketing.com from 2 July 2019 shows the company still titled 'Rakuten Marketing' at that date. A separate capture of rakutenadvertising.com from 1 March 2020 already carries the title 'Rakuten Advertising,' while its own embedded structured data still names the organization 'Rakuten Marketing,' a residue of the switch. Together the two snapshots place the rebrand somewhere between those two dates, without supplying the specific day of any internal decision.

The assumptions exposed

The '25+ years' and '$1b+' figures are Rakuten Advertising's own current marketing claims, not numbers drawn from an audited financial filing, and this entry does not convert them into a specific founding year the company's own page does not state. A reader who assumes the brand changed on one clean date is over-reading what web archives can show: a capture only proves what a page displayed on the day it was crawled, so the true change could have happened anywhere inside, or even outside, the window these two snapshots bound. The surviving linkshare.com and rakutenmarketing.com addresses inside today's own login menu show that a rebrand can leave a company's underlying infrastructure, and a publisher's old bookmarks, working long after the public-facing name has changed.

What to check before you rely on it

As an editorial checklist: read program terms from the current rakutenadvertising.com account rather than from older LinkShare-era material, ask an account manager for the effective date of any contract update rather than inferring it from brand history, and treat '25+ years' or '$1b+' language as the company's own unaudited claim until a dated, verifiable figure is published.

  • Which of LinkShare, Rakuten Marketing, or Rakuten Advertising is the legal name on my actual publisher agreement?
  • Does my account dashboard still route through a linkshare.com or rakutenmarketing.com address, and does that affect anything I rely on?
  • Is the '25+ years' or '$1b+' claim doing any real work in a decision I am making, or is it just marketing color?

A brand history built from archived snapshots is evidence of a window, not proof of a single date, and this entry treats it that way.
