The revenue mechanism
Sovrn Commerce, the product formerly operated as VigLink, automatically converts outbound commerce links inside editorial content into affiliate links across a network of merchants, letting a publisher earn a share of resulting purchases without separately joining each merchant's own affiliate programme. Sovrn's own product page, retrieved 16 September 2026, describes tools to "automate your affiliate operations and maximize your earnings," citing access to "50K+ Merchants" and an average 24-hour approval time for new merchant relationships, plus a link-optimization feature that routes "affiliate traffic to the optimal merchant network in real-time."
What the documents show
The commercial relationship runs through Sovrn's own Master Services Agreement, which states Sovrn "has sole discretion to identify, select, and manage relationships with advertisers, merchants, partners and other third parties" and to "establish pricing and other terms and conditions" with them — meaning a publisher does not negotiate individual merchant rates directly. On payment, the agreement states amounts under $50 for wire payments, or $25 for other payment methods, are deferred until the cumulative balance clears that threshold or the agreement ends, and that Sovrn may reduce a payment for chargebacks, including "commission cancellations, reversals, or deductions" tied to invalid traffic or a transaction a merchant determines was not bona fide. The agreement separately requires the publisher to "operate in accordance with all applicable privacy policies and all applicable laws, rules, and regulations."
The assumptions exposed
Sovrn's own compliance clause places general legal responsibility, including disclosure obligations under laws like the FTC's endorsement rules, on the publisher rather than stating any disclosure standard of its own; the Master Services Agreement retrieved here does not itself set out native-advertising or affiliate-disclosure language. "24 hrs average approval time" is Sovrn's own advertised figure for merchant relationships, not an audited service-level guarantee for any specific merchant.
What to check before you rely on it
This is an editorial checklist. A publisher relying on automatic link conversion should confirm which merchants a reader's clicks actually route to, since Sovrn chooses those relationships, and should keep its own disclosure current rather than assuming the network handles it.
- Does your existing affiliate disclosure cover automatically converted links, not only manually chosen affiliate links?
- Have you checked how chargebacks and invalid-traffic deductions could affect a payout you are counting as earned?
- Are you tracking which merchant network Sovrn is routing specific product mentions to, since that choice is made on Sovrn's side?
Automatic link conversion trades per-merchant sign-up work for reduced control over which merchant relationship actually pays out, a trade the Master Services Agreement states plainly but a publisher can easily overlook.
