IAB was built to standardize a size grid the market had improvised

IAB's own history page confirms its 1996 founding; the specific first size table it coordinated is not independently documented here.

The revenue mechanism

The Interactive Advertising Bureau describes itself, on its own current company page, as founded in 1996 and headquartered in New York. That page states IAB, in affiliation with the separately organized IAB Tech Lab, develops technical standards and solutions for the digital advertising industry, elevates professional skills across the workforce, and advocates for members through a public-policy office in Washington. This description reflects the document as retrieved on 16 September 2026 rather than a preserved 1996 charter, since no dated founding document is publicly posted for this record to check. IAB's founding year sits close behind the period when the rectangular banner, the 468-by-60-pixel unit that a Wired retrospective on HotWired's 1994 launch says took over the web, was already spreading across publisher sites without any shared specification body behind it.

What the documents show

IAB's current company page names three standing functions: standards development through IAB Tech Lab, professional development, and policy advocacy, and it states current membership at more than 700 companies, a 2026 figure that this record does not project backward onto 1996. IAB's public standards hub, also current as retrieved 16 September 2026, lists dozens of active technical specifications maintained through IAB Tech Lab, itself established as a separate consortium in 2014, covering ad measurement, supply-chain transparency and more, illustrating how far the standardization function has expanded from whatever grid of sizes the original trade group may have coordinated. The Wired retrospective on HotWired's 1994 launch supplies the size that needed standardizing: a 468x60 unit already treated as a de facto default two years before IAB existed.

The assumptions exposed

A living about page is not a historical charter, and this record cannot verify what specific sizes or terms IAB's founders adopted in 1996 because no dated 1996 document was available to open. The 700-member figure is IAB's own current, self-reported count, not an audited membership roll for any particular year. IAB Tech Lab's 2014 founding also means today's technical library should not be read as evidence of what existed at IAB's 1996 founding; the standards body a publisher deals with today is organizationally younger than the trade group that spun it off.

What to check before you rely on it

This is an editorial checklist for a publisher told a given ad format is a long-standing IAB standard.

  • Is the cited specification maintained by IAB itself or by the separately organized IAB Tech Lab?
  • Does the source date the specification's origin, or only describe its current, possibly revised, version?
  • Would the same size or measurement guideline have applied under the version in force on the date being discussed?

What survives from 1996 is less a specific document than a durable idea: that publishers, agencies and technology firms needed one shared table of ad shapes and terms rather than a separate negotiation for every site, a coordination problem the rectangular banner had already made visible.
