An AdSense balance cleared in January is paid out in February

Google's own payment pages show the currency-specific thresholds and hold periods that set when a publisher is actually paid.

The revenue mechanism

AdSense does not pay out as earnings accrue; it releases them only once a sequence of thresholds clears and a monthly cycle closes with no unresolved hold. Google's own Steps to getting paid page and its companion Payment thresholds page, both read as they stood on 16 September 2026, describe that sequence: a verification stage, a payment-method stage, and a payment stage, each triggered by its own dollar figure in the account's reporting currency.

What the documents show

For a USD account, the payment thresholds page states a verification threshold of ten dollars, a payment method selection threshold of ten dollars, and a payment threshold of one hundred dollars; the page states thresholds “vary depending on the reporting currency in your account,” with a table across more than 40 currencies, for example ten euros to verify against seventy euros to be paid, or ten pounds against sixty pounds. The steps-to-getting-paid page adds the timing: once the threshold is reached by month's end with no hold, Google issues payment “between the 21st and the 26th of the month” following, and gives a worked example where a hundred-dollar balance reached in January is paid at the end of February. Verification documents are due within 45 days of being requested, and PIN verification, a mailed code confirming a physical address, must be completed within four months and can itself take “up to 2-3 weeks” to arrive.

The assumptions exposed

A publisher who checks only the advertised monthly-payment framing can miss that the schedule starts only once a currency-specific balance clears, and that a missed PIN or stalled tax form is a payment hold here, not a delay Google resolves automatically. None of these numbers are audited; they are Google's own published thresholds on a living page that can change. The monthly payment the network is known for is more precisely a payment made the month after a threshold-clearing month, a full cycle later than an unread schedule might suggest.

What to check before you rely on it

This is an editorial checklist. Confirm the payment threshold that applies to the account's reporting currency rather than assuming the commonly cited hundred-dollar figure. Confirm no verification, PIN or tax step is outstanding before assuming a balance above threshold pays on schedule. Build cash-flow expectations around the cycle-plus-one-month timing in Google's own example, not the month the balance was earned.

  • What is the payment threshold for this account's specific reporting currency, not the figure most often quoted online?
  • Is identity verification, PIN confirmation and tax information all marked complete in the account?
  • Does the site's cash-flow plan already assume payment arrives the month after the threshold is cleared, not the month it is earned?

Treating the AdSense payment cycle as a same-month deposit is the most common misreading of these two pages, and the assumption most likely to leave a small publisher short when a bill is due.
